Final year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) student, Ng Qin Xiang, 18, from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) has clinched the Most Outstanding Junior College Science Student Award for 2011. Jointly presented by The World Scientific Publishing Company (WSPC) and The Imperial College Alumni Association of Singapore (ICAAS), this annual award is given to the most exceptional junior college science student who has the best academic achievements in science, the best ability to explain scientific results, and the best attitude to address difficult problems and issues.

Qin Xiang will represent Singapore at the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar which is held in conjunction with the Nobel Prize Ceremony. In addition, he will also attend the Nobel Banquet and other Nobel festivities in Stockholm from 4 to 11 December 2011.

“I am very honoured to receive this prestigious award. MOE first shortlisted 20 candidates and we had to face a panel of eminent scientists and distinguished educators who would decide the final winner. It was quite an experience”, added Qin Xiang, modestly. The selection committee is headed by Prof. Wong Limsoon, Provost’s Chair Professor and Head of Computer Science, School of Computing, National University of Singapore (NUS), and Professor of Pathology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Qin Xiang is looking forward to attending the Ceremony. “It’s a privilege to meet and interact with young scientists from around the world and to do so immediately after the November IBDP exam is a wonderful treat for me,” he added.

Past winners in the last 3 years were all students from NUS High School of Maths and Science. The award is the first for ACS (Independent).

Receiving the award from Prof Martyn R. Patridge, Senior Vice Dean, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, & Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Deputy Director of Education, Imperial College London.
