Report on Library Week

Library Week 1994, which was held from 4 to 8 April, went off with a flying start.

The first few days saw the launching of the "Boggle Competition" in which participants had to find the surnames of authors in the word puzzle grid. The response was overwhelming, with prizes being awarded to the first five all-correct entries. Displays cum sales of books were held by several publishing companies such as MPH and ShingLee in the refectory throughout the week. The books on sale ranged from general reference to comics to serious/science fiction. However, book displays were not restricted to only English books but also covered the Second Languages. Book talks were also held on Thursday and Friday afternoon. The Chinese Book Talk by Mdm Tham Yew Chin was well received and so too was the talk by Times Publishing Company on how to use "The Great Books" series. The students found the talks both interesting and informative.

However, the highlight of this year's Library Week was unquestionably the Book Character Search Parade and Contest. Eight pupils personified characters in famous storybooks by dressing up as their respective characters which ranged from figures such as Merlin and Hang Tuah to Sherlock Holmes and Frankenstein. These eight pupils paraded in their costumes made from materials procured from various sources and imaginative ly assembled. However, the two Chinese characters' costumes were loaned from a Chinese opera company.

The boys paraded in the area next to the amphitheatre after the morning devotions to the delight of the students watching from their classroom corridors. Pupils were challenged to identify the different characters by the actions of the eight pupils and by their costumes that were put on display in the Library. On the same day, the "Use-the-Library Bingo" competition was launched and will be on until 31 August 1994.

The student librarians and teachers-in-charge appreciate the participation of the pupils in all the contests and thank them for making this year's Library Week yet another successful and enjoyable one.
